6 uses for garages

Over half of the houses in the UK have garages, but very few of them are reported to be used for storing cars. This begs the question of just what people are doing with their extra space?

Often garages become a treasure trove of old, and often unused, bits and bobs. However, used wisely, a garage can offer almost unlimited possibilities. If you are struggling with what to do with your garage, or want to make the most of your extra space, here are just a few of the exciting things that you could consider.

1- Home gym

Instead of cluttering up your house with weights and treadmills, laying down some rubber mats and turning your garage into a fully functioning gym can be a great way to stay healthy and use the free space. By having all the equipment you need to stay fit on your doorstep not only can you avoid paying costly gym membership fees, but it also makes it easier to get out of bed and get a workout in before you go out.

2- Yoga studio

Yoga is an increasingly popular hobby with people in the UK. It is a great way to decrease stress levels and remain calm, so what better place to do this than in the comfort of your own home. Light some incense, put down a yoga mat and put on some relaxing music, and you have a zen spot away from the bustle of day to day life.

3- Crafts room

Instead of using your garage for storing items you don’t need anymore, why not use it for something you love. Whatever hobbies you enjoy doing, garages can be a fantastic place to do it without distraction. Whether you are a budding artist or seasoned carpenter, using your garage as a place to work on personal projects allows you to let your creative side flourish, and transform your garage a place that you look forward to visiting.

4- Car storage

There are plenty of other creative things you can do with your garage, but there is no disputing that it is great for storing cars. Instead of spending time chiselling away ice from your windscreen in the winter mornings, you can simply open your garage door and be ready to go. Lots of insurance companies reduce policy prices when a car is stored in a garage as it will be safer. Having your car stored in a garage also means that you can perform maintenance and cleaning with all your tools to hand.

5- Office space

Need to get on with work but struggle to do it when you have so many household distractions? Transforming your garage into a dedicated work space can be a great way of improving your productivity. If you work from home, or even if you just want to do some quiet calculations, having an office garage can be a fantastic idea.

6- Man cave/ mum cave/ teenage hang-out

If you are bored or unsatisfied with your garage, or don’t really use it, it may be time to get creative with how you use it. There are lots of homes without the luxury of having garages, so you should take full advantage of the extra space. Fill it up with the things that you love and make the space yours. If you have teenagers around the house, you could consider getting a pool table, a dart board and moving the games console so that not only do they then have a great place to hang out with friends, but parents get some much needed peace and quiet!
